CASSETTE PLAYA interview

Thursday, June 24, 2010

How did your Toy Story character inspire you and then mirror your design aesthetic?

BUZZ IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER BECAUSE HE IS A FEARLESS FUTURIST AND ADVENTURER! THE ULTIMATE CASSETTE PLAYA WARRIOR , TO INFINITY AND BEYOND !

How would you say your trademark looks or signature styles are represented in your Toy Story piece?

OUR DESIGN IS TOTAL SIGNATURE CASSETTE PLAYA = GRAPHIC, FUTURE AND CARTOON

This is quite a unique project, how did you get started and was the creative process different than how you normally design clothing?

WE OFTEN TAKE INFLUENCE FROM COMICS AND CARTOONS AND FILMS SO OUR PROCESS WASNT SO DIFFERENT. CASSETTE PLAYA IS ABOUT BUILDING NEW WORLDS AND CHARACTERS SO TRANSLATING BUZZ INTO OUR DESIGN WAS VERY SIMULAR TO THE WAY WE DESIGN WACH SEASON

This is also about your “love of toys” and growing up with the Toy Story film, what was your favorite toy from the movie?

BUZZ OF COURSE! BUT I ALSO L O V E THE ALIENS !! OOOOOOO

Has the film inspired you in any other fashion or non-fashion related ways?

I ACTUALLY REFERENCED BUZZ IN MY FIRST COLLECTION!  ALSO WHEN I FIRST SAW THE FILM I WAS REALLY EXCITED BY THE CGI, WE ALSO USE CGI IMAGES IN OUR DIGITAL AND TRANSFER PRINT.

Henry Holland Interview

Thursday, June 24, 2010

How did your Toy Story character inspire you and then mirror your design aesthetic?

I loved all the different elements and colours to jessie's costume and her kick ass attitude very much reflects the girl who I design for. I loved the bold and bright colours in her costume and so used them quite literally on a tuxedo tee design.

How would you say your trademark looks or signature styles are represented in your Toy Story piece?

I suppose my trademark style is very bright, bold and humourous tee graphics so I think the idea of a tuxedo shirt reflects this perfectly. Luckily jesse's costume is very bright and bold and so I was able to utilise the colours too. The finished piece is fun and enjoyable to wear and that's something that I always aim for with everything I do.

This is quite a unique project, how did you get started and was the creative process different than how you normally design clothing?

I started by looking at the character - Jessie - who I was paired with and looked at her costume within the film and her character traits. Jessie is a kick ass cowgirl with a lot of attitude and I wanted to reflect that. The design process was different in some ways as I had to fully represent an existing character within the piece but also it was similar in many ways. I had a girl in mind that I was designing for as I do with my mainline collection, only this time the girl was a cartoon cowgirl!

This is also about your “love of toys” and growing up with the Toy Story film, what was your favorite toy from the movie?

My favourite toy in the movie is either Buzz or Mr Potato head. I love buzz costume and think mr potato head is hilarious.

Has the film inspired you in any other fashion or non-fashion related ways?

I find animation very inspiring as it's such a bright, colourful and fun fantasy world that you get to explore.

Interview with Jonathan Saunders

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Scottish born print designer Jonathan Saunders graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1999 with a BA in Printed Textiles, going on to graduate from Central Saint Martin’s in 2002 with an MA with distinction in Printed Textiles, subsequently winning him the Lancôme Colour Awards 2002. In September 2006, he was awarded the Fashion Enterprise Award by the British Fashion Council. As a special invitation from the BFC for SS10, September 2009 fashion week, Jonathan Saunders presented back in London for the 25th anniversary of London fashion week.

Jonathan shares his thoughts on his Toy Story collaborative experience.

How did your Toy Story character inspire you and then mirror your design aesthetic?

Rex is a great character – he’s bold, fun and colourful – I wanted the design to reflect this.

How would you say your trademark looks or signature styles are represented in your Toy Story piece?

Graphic imagery and placement print has always been an integral part of my work. I also love to combine different patterns and prints together like collage. I have used all these techniques in the Toy story Piece.

This is quite a unique project, how did you get started and was the creative process different than how you normally design clothing?

It’s quite similar – there is always a key idea or starting point for the collection – ideas then evolve and change as you try different things out – I worked in the same way with my Rex t shirt. It’s been great to work with a concept that’s so fun, sometimes fashion can get a little to serious.

This is also about your “love of toys” and growing up with the Toy Story film, what was your favorite toy from the movie?

Obviously Rex!!

Has the film inspired you in any other fashion or non-fashion related ways?

Reading up on the work that goes into producing the Toy story movie is inspiring – so much thought, time and research. But it’s all worth it!
